About Me

Training Built on Experience.Trusted by Professionals.

I'm Craig MacNeil — a fifth-generation logger and certified instructor based in Kielder Forest, Northumberland.

With over 35 years working in silviculture, arboriculture and commercial forestry, I bring real, hands-on experience to every course I teach. My approach is patient and practical: I take complex, real-world challenges and turn them into clear, manageable techniques.

The aim is simple — you should leave feeling safe, capable and ready for the next step in your forestry journey, whatever your starting point.

Why Train With M5

A Welcoming Way Into Forestry

We set out to be the most welcoming and accessible entry point into forestry careers — patient guidance, real working conditions, and safety at the centre of everything.

A Place to Start

New to the saw or the forest? You'll get patient, supportive instruction with no pressure — space to build genuine confidence and skill.

Real Environments

Training takes place in genuine working forest conditions in Kielder, so what you learn transfers straight to real-world commercial work.

Safety, First & Always

Every course is built around current industry safety standards. We combine traditional forestry knowledge with today's best safety practice.

A Family Legacy

Five Generations Rooted in the Forest

The M5 story runs from the timberlands of one generation to the training ground of the next — three chapters of the same craft.

01

The Roots — Grandfather

A Century of Tradition

A third-generation woodsman who lived by a sharp chain, steady hands and a deep respect for the forest. He set the values we still work by today — resilience, craftsmanship and care for the woodland.

02

The Trunk — Father

Evolution & Education

A fourth-generation logger who turned decades of family know-how into structured training — bridging classic logging skills with modern safety science, and laying the foundation of the M5 approach.

03

The Crown — Craig

The Next Generation

The fifth generation, combining that heritage with modern precision felling techniques — and passing the confidence, safety and mastery on to the next generation of forestry professionals.

Testimonials

What Trainees Say

Craig's patience made all the difference. I came in nervous and left with my CS30/31 and real confidence on the saw.
TRTom R.Trainee Arborist
First-class instruction in a proper working forest. The small group meant I got real hands-on time, not just standing and watching.
SLSarah L.Groundworker
Booked my forwarder assessment with M5 — the most practical, no-nonsense training I've done in years. Highly recommended.
