M5 Training is a family-run forestry school in Kielder Forest, Northumberland — built on five generations of woodland craft and a simple belief: that forestry should be open, welcoming and safe for anyone ready to learn.

Meet Your Instructor

Training Built on Experience.Trusted by Professionals.

I'm Craig MacNeil — a fifth-generation logger and certified instructor based in Kielder Forest.

Forestry has been in my family for well over a century. I grew up around the work, the woodland and the tools, and I've spent more than 35 years of my own in silviculture, arboriculture and commercial forestry. Over that time I've worked just about every part of the job — from planting and management through to precision felling and modern mechanised operations.

I started M5 Training to pass that experience on. My approach is patient and practical: I take the complex, real-world parts of the job and break them down into clear, manageable steps. Whether you've never held a saw before or you're an experienced operator updating your tickets, you'll be met where you are — no pressure, no jargon, just good instruction.

The goal is always the same. You should leave feeling safe, capable and genuinely confident for the next step in your forestry journey.

Five Generations Rooted in the Forest

The M5 story runs from the timberlands of one generation to the training ground of the next — the same craft, carried forward and brought into the modern era.

01

The Roots — Grandfather

A Century of Tradition

A third-generation woodsman who lived by a sharp chain, steady hands and a deep respect for the forest. He set the values we still work by today — resilience, craftsmanship and genuine care for the woodland.

02

The Trunk — Father

Evolution & Education

A fourth-generation logger who turned decades of family know-how into structured training — bridging classic logging skill with modern safety science, and laying the foundation of the M5 approach.

03

The Crown — Craig

The Next Generation

The fifth generation, combining that heritage with modern precision-felling and machine techniques — and passing the confidence, safety and mastery on to the next generation of forestry professionals.
